Dissecting cell mechanics: a molecular motor laid bare

Cells are dynamic objects which like automobiles need fuel for their motors to run. ATP molecules act as that fuel and the part of motor is played by several families of proteins, including myosins. Without a motor, everything grinds to a halt, from cell division to protein synthesis and cell signaling. At the Institut Curie, CNRS researchers have just determined the atomic structure of one of these motors essential to cell life: myosin V. This discovery will enhance understanding of the role of this large family of molecular motors and their involvement in certain genetic diseases.
