European Research Council (ERC) Grants

The Institut Curie has garnered a number of prestigious grants awarded by the European Research Council (ERC).

At the end of 2009, three young researchers at the Institut Curie, Renata Basto, Ana-Maria Lennon-Duménil, and Antonin Morillon, who has just joined us, were among 80 young researchers across Europe—of the 927 who submitted a life sciences proposal—selected for their excellence by the ERC. These young researchers are destined to become the leaders of the research of tomorrow.

In early 2010, two directors of research units at the Institut Curie, Geneviève Almouzni and Edith Heard, were among the 89 researchers in Europe awarded ERC Advanced Investigators Grants for their work in the life sciences. In 2008, the ERC’s first call for research proposals led to grants for two young Institut Curie researchers— Angela Taddei and Yohanns Bellaïche—and for an established researcher, Sebastian Amigorena. These researchers will each receive funding of up to 3.5 million euros.

These grants were the fruit of the Institut Curie’s policy, which has been in place since 1995, of supporting young researchers and encouraging the pursuit of ambitious research projects. In addition to providing a stimulating environment, the Institut Curie facilitates the mobility and responsibility of young teams.

With eight researchers selected, the Institut Curie occupies a strong position in these awards, thus confirming its position as one of Europe’s leading research centers. The diversity of the successful proposals (immunology, genetics, developmental biology, epigenetics, cell biology) illustrates the vitality of the research conducted at the Institut Curie. Since its creation, the Institut Curie has based its strategy on exchange of skills and close collaboration between medical and scientific teams. Through the sharing of skills and the creation of conditions that favor expertise and innovation, the Institut Curie Research Center provides a setting that is conducive to discoveries and scientific advances.
